Mercedes unleashes Gran Turismo 6 vision

Published - 19 Nov 2013

Mercedes-Benz has revealed a spectacular new virtual sportscar concept created by its in-house design team for inclusion in Sony's new PlayStation 3 game Gran Turismo 6.

Called the AMG Vision Gran Turismo, the brawny looking gullwing coupe is planned to be revealed as a model at the opening of Mercedes-Benz's new research and development centre in Sunnyvale, California on the eve of this week's Los Angeles motor show.

Yet despite the unveiling in 1:1 scale, the new two seater is destined to remain a feature of the virtual world as the first in what Mercedes-Benz is billing as a series of Vision Gran Turismo vehicles to be unveiled in the near future.

While the virtual properties of the AMG Vision Gran Turismo mean it will only ever see running as a high resolution graphic within the new Gran Turismo 6 game this hasn't deterred Mercedes-Benz from providing it with detailed styling and mechanical data – elements of which are said to provide solid hints to the upcoming GT AMG due to be unveiled in mid-2014 as a range topping replacement for the SLS AMG.

Drawing inspiration from the iconic 300 SL, Mercedes-Benz designer have provided their latest concept with exaggerated proportions, with a long probing nose and cabin sited well back within the wheelbase giving an instantly aggressive appearance that is further enhanced by bulging wheel houses and a wide track stance.

Central among the detailing brought to the exterior design of the AMG Vision Gran Turismo is a traditionally shaped chromed rimmed grille imbued with a large centre three pointed star badge and individual LEDs that act as modern day louvres to provide varying light patterns.

In a further nod to the past, the virtual Mercedes-Benz also receives gullwing doors that hinge from a centre point within the roof, similar in fashion to those seen on the soon-to-be-discontinued SLS AMG.

Inside, there is a futuristic looking interior that Mercedes-Benz says has been inspired by a modern day F1 cockpit. The instruments take the form of a glass display that floats above the steering wheel, revealing information such as speed, revs and operating temperature. Among the controls are classic rocker switches in the centre of the dashboard and within the headlining – the latter layout said to be mirrored on the upcoming GT AMG.

For its inclusion in Gran Turismo 6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo has been conceived to run a twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine of unspecified size mounted up front where, in the virtual world, it develops 430kW  together with 800Nm of torque.

With a virtual aluminium spaceframe body weighing 1385kg, this provides it with a power-to-weight ratio of 3.2kg/kW.

Mercedes-Benz describes this figure as being ''unrivalled in the super sports car segment and one that guarantees exceptionally dynamic performance'' – a statement that has led to rumours suggesting the performance data may in fact point to a Black Series variant of next year's GT AMG due to make an appearance in 2016.

To complete the experience, Mercedes-Benz has provided its virtual concept with eight tailpipes and what it describes as a ''sonorous exhaust note''.

GT6 – Post-Release Sound Patch Planned

Published - 18 Sep 2013

Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 6 is set to hit the shelves this winter and the title’s initial release will likely come with the much-criticesed current engine sounds as revealed by Kazunori Yamauchi.

Speaking at a press event, Yamauchi revealed that Polyphony Digital won’t be able to include improved engine sounds in the first release of the new title:

“I think I mentioned this in the past, but we’re really working to change the fundamental way that the engine sound works,” Yamauchi commented at a press event in Tokyo. “Right now I have a feeling that it might not make it for day one for GT6.”

Even though a sound patch wasn’t officially confirmed, Yamauchi stated that “there’s a good possibility that we might do this.” Until then, players will have to live with the less than stellar current sounds such as those of the BMW Z4 GT3 you can listen to below.

The sound department isn’t the only aspect in which features from GT6 have been scaled-back to make the planned December 6 release:

The full day/night cycle will be limited to three major endurance racing tracks as only Le Mans, Spa Francorchamps & the Nürburgring will be equipped with that feature in the initial version.

Furthermore, GT6 won’t allow users to import save games from Gran Turismo 5 as Polyphony Digital is worried about data having been cracked and corrupted along the way.

Gran Turismo 6 will come to the Playstation 3 starting December 6. featuring 1200 cars, 150 of which will be new to Gran Turismo.

As announced by Kazunori Yamauchi, the distinction between standard & premium models will remain, the cars ported over from Gran Turismo 4 will be slightly touched up to fit the new title better.

GT6 will also come with 33 tracks, with seven locations being all-new including Silverstone, the home of Nissan’s GT Academy competition.
